What are we about?
Our aim is to help students both academically and socially. Not everything can be learnt in lectures, particularly in fields of law that Bangor University doesn't offer, e.g. Medical Law. As well as this, our Society strives to prepare students to the best of its ability for the actual working world outside of university. On Friday 24th February, the President of the Law Society for England and Wales, Mr John Wotton, visited Bangor, met with the students and gave a practical lecture on the challenges faced by Law graduates today and how best to succeed in this ever-changing environment. As well as being probably some of the best first-hand advice our law students can get about careers, it was also a significant vote of confidence for Bangor and our Law Society.
What do we do?
We've already been visited by Mr John Kennedy, a barrister in medical law, who gave an extensive, frankly fascinating lecture on one of his own upcoming cases about cerebral palsy as a result of the hospital's negligence. Even for those of us who weren't studying Tort at the time, it was really helpful and insightful to see some of the stuff that actually goes in to preparing a case. As already mentioned, the President of the Law Society visited us, and we are expecting a visit from a College of Law representative to explain the LPC and everything that comes with it. We also have plenty of upcoming talks/events, so watch the Events page both on here and on Facebook.
Not all of our events take place in Bangor. To date, we've had trips down to Cardiff and London to visit the Assembly and Parliament respectively, and last November former President Aaron Bridge organised a successful trip to Edinburgh and a tour around the Scottish Parliament and the Court.
But that's all about academia. As a Society, we naturally aren't averse to going out and having a laugh on top of our studies. Pub golf has been a recent favourite, but we are also hoping to fit in a trip to the Caernarfon Centre and maybe even a hike up Snowdon (for those of us who don't fancy the challenge of getting the train that is)
At the end of each Academic Term, we have a meal which everybody in the Society is invited to and they may bring guests. As well as being ample opportunity to enjoy good food and say that last farewell before the holidays, we usually incorporate it with the award-giving ceremonies for the Moot competitions, and as was the case of the Christmas Meal, the handover to the new Committee. After the formalities, there's usually a disco and the chance to mingle with your lecturers outside of the academic environment.
